- Adjusted earnings per share rose to 0.57 US dollars, while operating margin reached 39.1 percent.
- Intermodal volume increased 7 percent and reached a quarterly record.
- Management linked the results to higher freight volumes, pricing and fuel surcharge revenue.
CSX Corp. reported record quarterly revenue and stronger profitability for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. In its October 21 release, the railroad said revenue rose 12 percent year over year to 4.02 billion US dollars, while diluted earnings per share reached 0.57 US dollars.
The figures came with a clear operational improvement. Total freight volume increased 5 percent to 1.69 million units, and operating income rose to 1.57 billion US dollars. Operating margin reached 39.1 percent, compared with 30.3 percent a year earlier. The prior-year comparison included a 164 million US dollar non-cash goodwill impairment; against adjusted 2025 results, CSX said operating income increased 25 percent, net earnings 29 percent and earnings per share 30 percent.
Freight Mix Supports Revenue Growth
CSX said the revenue increase reflected higher fuel surcharge revenue, increased volume and pricing across merchandise, intermodal and coal. Intermodal volume grew 7 percent and reached a record, while the company also cited broad-based demand across its freight network.
President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Angel said disciplined execution enabled CSX to move more freight while maintaining safety and service standards. He added that the railroad entered the fourth quarter positioned to continue its progress toward stronger performance in 2027. The company published the results through Nasdaq.
Execution Remains The Next Test
The results strengthen the case for a productivity-led improvement, but the next phase depends on whether CSX can sustain volume gains and service quality beyond a quarter supported by pricing and fuel-related revenue. The operating margin expansion gives investors a more direct measure of cost execution than revenue growth alone.
