CSL is preparing for a leadership change after a difficult financial year. In a report by Australian Associated Press, outgoing chair Brian McNamee said incoming chief executive Deborah Waterhouse has the experience needed to repair the damage. Waterhouse is due to take charge on February 1, 2027, while interim chief executive Gordon Naylor remains in place until the handover.
Loss exposes pressure on Vifor
CSL reported a statutory net loss of US$2.6 billion for fiscal 2025/26, compared with a US$3 billion profit a year earlier. The result reflected writedowns in its Vifor kidney-treatment and iron-deficiency businesses, which have faced generic competition and regulatory changes since CSL acquired Vifor in 2022.
The deterioration has weighed on investor confidence through earnings downgrades, management changes and a restructuring plan that could remove about 3,000 jobs. McNamee told shareholders that the board and management had been refreshed, while defending Vifor's iron franchise as cash generative. His comments frame the recovery as a combination of cost control, portfolio repair and renewed execution rather than a single product catalyst.
Management targets operational recovery
Naylor said CSL could deliver US$400 million in savings as it enters fiscal 2026/27 and confirmed a forecast for a 5 percent increase in annual underlying net profit. He also described cash generation as a core strength that supports investment, balance-sheet resilience and capital returns.
The plasma business remains central to that outlook. Management said reliable plasma supply is critical to the long-term expansion of the immunoglobulin franchise and that CSL is working to improve collection and manufacturing capabilities. For investors, execution in plasma is likely to remain a key test of whether the forecast recovery can offset pressure elsewhere in the portfolio.
Waterhouse inherits a mixed portfolio
Waterhouse joins from ViiV Healthcare, where she led the HIV-focused company for about a decade. She will be CSL's first female chief executive. Naylor is expected to return to the board as a non-executive director after the transition, while McNamee plans to retire as chair at the end of March.
CSL's vaccine unit Seqirus faces additional uncertainty in the United States after changes to the policy framework for immunisation. Naylor said the business was nevertheless gaining market share and benefiting from the quality of its vaccine portfolio. That contrast leaves the incoming CEO with a recovery agenda spanning plasma supply, Vifor profitability, vaccines and operating efficiency.
