- The Reserve Bank of Australia raised its cash rate for the fifth time in 2026.
- CommBank expects rates to remain restrictive while inflation risks stay elevated.
- The bank forecasts a sharper slowdown than the RBA through mid-2027.
Commonwealth Bank of Australia stock enters a new policy phase after the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its cash rate on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The quarter-point move was the central bank's fifth increase this year, taking the rate to 4.85 percent.
In a CommBank analysis, economists said the decision was split, with six Monetary Policy Board members supporting the increase and three preferring no change. The economists now expect the RBA to hold rates while it assesses incoming inflation and activity data, although another increase in 2027 remains a risk.
Pressure on households and lenders
CommBank expects annual economic growth to reach a low of 1 percent in mid-2027 before recovering to 2.1 percent by the end of 2028. Its forecast is weaker than the RBA's mid-2027 growth projection of 1.6 percent.
Higher borrowing costs, inflation and a softer labour market are expected to reduce household spending. CommBank sees annual spending growth slowing to 0.7 percent by mid-2027. For the bank, weaker demand could weigh on credit growth and asset quality, while higher rates may continue to support lending margins.
