Commerzbank stock enters a new earnings phase after a record nine-month result. The bank trims its 2026 interest-income outlook amid deposit competition.

Record results meet a softer outlook

  • Third-quarter operating profit rose strongly year on year, while net return on tangible equity improved.
  • Management confirmed its 2026 net result, revenue and capital targets.
  • Deposit competition prompted a lower full-year net interest income expectation.

Commerzbank reported its strongest nine-month performance in its history on Thursday, November 5, after publishing its third-quarter figures. The Commerzbank release showed a sharp rise in quarterly profit, stronger commission income and a confirmed full-year earnings target.

Profit growth remains broad-based

Third-quarter operating profit increased 25% year on year to 1.312 billion euros. Net result attributable to Commerzbank shareholders rose 45% to 859 million euros, while revenue advanced 9% to 3.199 billion euros.

For the first nine months, operating profit reached a record 4.037 billion euros, up 17% from the prior-year period. Net result rose 41% to 2.669 billion euros. The increase partly reflects restructuring expenses recorded in the prior-year period, a relevant qualification when assessing the underlying momentum.

Net commission income grew 9% in the quarter, supported mainly by securities activity in the Private and Small-Business Customers segment. Net interest income increased 3% to 2.115 billion euros, while the cost-income ratio including compulsory contributions improved to 52%.

Interest outlook becomes the key caveat

Commerzbank confirmed its 2026 net result target of at least 3.4 billion euros, revenue guidance of around 13.2 billion euros and a net return on tangible equity target of around 12%. It also maintained its expectation for a Common Equity Tier 1 ratio above 14% at year-end after capital returns.

The bank now expects 2026 net interest income of around 8.5 billion euros, compared with about 8.6 billion euros previously. It attributed the adjustment to increased competition for deposits. The bank kept its targets for net commission income, costs and risk result broadly unchanged.

Capital returns and UniCredit remain relevant

Commerzbank said its share buyback of up to 1.2 billion euros had reached about 70% of the targeted volume. Its broader capital-return plan for 2026 remains around 3.2 billion euros, subject to the stated conditions.

The bank also said UniCredit's takeover offer remains subject to further regulatory approvals, with completion expected during the fourth quarter or by early 2027 at the latest. That timetable leaves operating performance and the interest-income outlook as two central factors for investors assessing the next phase.

The DAX provides the broad market backdrop for German banks as investors weigh earnings and takeover developments.
