- Ciena's fiscal third-quarter revenue rose 37 percent year over year to US$1.67 billion.
- The backlog reached US$8.5 billion, while management expects it to exceed US$10 billion by fiscal year-end.
- Free cash flow fell to US$116 million from US$135 million a year earlier, with supply commitments set to pressure fourth-quarter operating cash flow.
Ciena's improving profitability is facing a cash-flow test as the networking equipment maker commits funds to secure components through 2029. In an analysis published by Yahoo Finance on Thursday, October 29, Trefis said Ciena's profit margins had strengthened substantially while the share of sales converted into cash had not improved at the same pace.

Margins Rise As Cash Conversion Lags
Ciena generated US$1.67 billion in fiscal third-quarter revenue for the period ended August 1, up 37 percent from a year earlier. Trefis said operating margin reached 18.1 percent, compared with 6.2 percent in the year-ago quarter, extending a four-quarter run of margin expansion.
The analysis also pointed to demand from data-center infrastructure and hyperscale customers. Management said on the September 3 earnings call that roughly half of Ciena's business now comes directly from hyperscalers. The company ended the quarter with an US$8.5 billion backlog of orders taken but not yet delivered, and management expects the figure to exceed US$10 billion by the end of fiscal 2026.
That growth is raising the importance of execution. Ciena's free cash flow fell to US$116 million in the latest quarter from US$135 million a year earlier, according to Trefis. Over the twelve months to August 1, free cash flow represented 13.5 percent of sales, little changed from 13.3 percent in the comparable prior-year period.
Supply Commitments Set The Next Test
Management said operating cash flow is expected to fall in fiscal fourth quarter 2026 as Ciena pays for long-term agreements securing key components through 2029. The commitments are intended to support delivery against strong demand, but they can absorb cash before the related equipment reaches customers.
The next scheduled business checkpoint is the fiscal fourth-quarter report expected in December 2026. Investors will be watching whether Ciena can convert its backlog and margin gains into stronger cash generation while maintaining access to constrained components.
