Chubb Limited stock faces a trade-off between record operating profit and slower premium growth. International and personal lines remained resilient.

Profitability Outpaces Premium Growth

  • Chubb's third-quarter core operating income reached 2.98 billion US dollars, while nine-month core operating income rose 21% to a record 8.60 billion US dollars.
  • Property and casualty premiums increased 1.9%, but North America Commercial premiums declined 2.7% as Chubb reduced selected exposures and added reinsurance.
  • Higher catastrophe losses pressured quarterly underwriting, while international, personal-lines and life businesses continued to expand.

Chubb Limited delivered strong profitability in the third quarter despite slower premium expansion and higher catastrophe losses. In its October 20 earnings release, the insurer reported net income of 2.84 billion US dollars and core operating income of 2.98 billion US dollars for the quarter ended September 30, 2026.

Core operating income declined 2.2% from the prior-year quarter, while core operating income per share rose 0.8% to 7.66 US dollars. Chubb attributed the comparison to particularly light catastrophe losses in the year-earlier period. For the first nine months, core operating income rose 21% to a record 8.60 billion US dollars, and core operating income per share increased 24.5% to 21.94 US dollars.

Underwriting Remains Profitable

Property and casualty net premiums written increased 1.9% to 13.18 billion US dollars. Underwriting income reached 2.06 billion US dollars, while the combined ratio was 84.1%. Excluding catastrophe losses and prior-period development, the current accident-year combined ratio was 82.6%, and underlying underwriting income increased 3.3%.

Catastrophe losses were a key drag on the reported comparison. Pre-tax catastrophe losses rose to 705 million US dollars from 285 million US dollars a year earlier. The higher claims burden pushed the combined ratio above the prior-year level even as Chubb maintained profitable underwriting.

Growth was uneven across business lines. North America Commercial premiums fell 2.7% as Chubb reduced exposure in selected property and financial-lines business and used additional reinsurance. Chief Executive Evan Greenberg said management expects North America Commercial growth to improve in future quarters.

Other areas provided a counterweight. North America Personal premiums increased 5.3%, agriculture premiums rose 5.1% and Overseas General premiums advanced 6.7%. Within Overseas General, commercial insurance grew 6.3% and consumer insurance 7.2%, with Latin America, Asia and Europe also posting growth.

Investment And Life Income Support Results

Investment income strengthened the quarter. Pre-tax net investment income reached a record 1.79 billion US dollars, up 8.6%, while adjusted net investment income rose 6.3% to a record 1.89 billion US dollars. Life Insurance segment income increased 11.4% to 369 million US dollars, and life premiums written rose 1.4% to 1.96 billion US dollars.

Chubb also returned 1.57 billion US dollars to shareholders during the quarter, including 1.18 billion US dollars of share repurchases and 393 million US dollars of dividends. Tangible book value per share increased 5.7% year over year to 126.96 US dollars, although investment mark-to-market effects weighed on book value during the quarter.

The real-time quote of Chubb Limited stock was 329.95 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:09 CET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
