Cenovus Energy reported record upstream production and higher earnings for the third quarter on November 4, while advancing its planned acquisition of Athabasca Oil. The results were carried by stronger oil sands output and downstream operations, although consolidated revenue declined from the previous quarter.
According to BOE Report, which republished the company release, upstream production reached 1,023.5 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, compared with 970.4 thousand in the second quarter and 832.9 thousand a year earlier. Oil sands production reached 833.0 thousand barrels per day, with records at Christina Lake, Foster Creek and Sunrise.
Production milestone supports operating leverage
Net earnings rose to 3.360 billion Canadian dollars from 2.870 billion in the second quarter and 1.286 billion in the third quarter of 2025. Diluted earnings per share increased to 1.83 Canadian dollars from 1.53 Canadian dollars sequentially and 0.72 Canadian dollars a year earlier.
Total revenue was 16.0 billion Canadian dollars, down from 17.4 billion in the second quarter. Upstream revenue fell to 10.6 billion Canadian dollars from 12.6 billion, while downstream revenue increased to 8.6 billion from 8.2 billion. Total operating margin rose to 6.329 billion Canadian dollars from 5.868 billion, helped by downstream operating margin of 1.794 billion Canadian dollars.
Adjusted funds flow was 5.023 billion Canadian dollars, broadly stable sequentially, while free funds flow declined to 3.569 billion from 3.786 billion as capital investment increased. Net debt fell to 2.999 billion Canadian dollars at September 30, down from 5.388 billion at the end of the prior quarter.
Athabasca deal sets next catalyst
Cenovus said its agreement to acquire Athabasca, announced on October 5, values the target at approximately 12.00 Canadian dollars per share and implies enterprise value of 5.7 billion Canadian dollars. The transaction is expected to add approximately 45 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day of current production and 1.3 billion barrels of proved plus probable reserves. Closing is expected in December, subject to shareholder, court and other customary approvals.
The Athabasca vote is scheduled for November 27. For Cenovus, the deal would increase exposure to adjacent oil sands resources and give production growth an additional route beyond existing optimization projects. The company also said its fifth steam generator at Christina Lake North came online ahead of schedule and that Sunrise reached its 70 thousand barrel-per-day target one year early.
