- Third-quarter revenue rose 15 percent year over year, while revenue ton-miles increased 6 percent.
- Core adjusted diluted earnings per share advanced 16 percent despite higher fuel costs weighing on operating efficiency.
- Management said the railroad remains on track to meet its 2026 commitments.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City reported strong third-quarter growth on October 28, but higher fuel costs kept pressure on operating efficiency. In its earnings release, the railroad said revenue reached CAD 4.219 billion in the three months ended September 30, up 15 percent from CAD 3.661 billion a year earlier.
Volume, measured in revenue ton-miles, increased 6 percent. Reported diluted earnings per share rose 3 percent to CAD 1.04 from CAD 1.01, while core adjusted diluted earnings per share climbed 16 percent to CAD 1.28 from CAD 1.10. The adjusted figure is a non-GAAP measure and is therefore not directly comparable with every company reporting under standard accounting definitions.
Fuel Costs Weigh On Efficiency
The main pressure point was the operating ratio, where a lower percentage indicates better efficiency. CPKC's reported ratio increased to 64.8 percent from 63.5 percent, while the core adjusted ratio rose to 61.9 percent from 60.7 percent. The company said higher fuel prices affected the reported ratio by 170 basis points and the core adjusted ratio by 190 basis points.
Operating income nevertheless increased 11 percent to CAD 1.487 billion from CAD 1.336 billion. The company also reported freight revenue of CAD 4.139 billion, compared with CAD 3.589 billion in the third quarter of 2025. Grain and intermodal were among the growth areas highlighted by management, supporting the case that network expansion and pricing are offsetting part of the cost pressure.

Management Keeps Its 2026 Focus
Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel said the railroad was running well, with service remaining strong across grain, intermodal and merchandise markets. He added that disciplined execution and a robust commercial pipeline left CPKC on track to meet its commitments for the year.
For investors, the quarter presents a mixed operating picture. Revenue momentum and higher adjusted earnings point to resilient demand, while the wider operating ratio shows that fuel inflation can absorb part of the benefit. The next test is whether volume growth, pricing and productivity gains can keep margins from deteriorating as the company moves through the final quarter.
