PT Bumi Resources completed the acquisition of Mount Margaret Mining on October 23, 2026, expanding its exposure to copper and gold in Queensland. Mining.com.au reported the transaction on October 26.

Bumi Resources Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary, acquired 100 percent of Mount Margaret Mining's issued capital for USD 22.01 million. The purchase gives Bumi indirect control of the Mount Margaret Copper-Gold Project and advances the company's stated effort to build a broader mining portfolio beyond its established coal operations.

Mount Margaret adds copper and gold exposure

The project includes the E1 and Monakoff copper-gold deposits, about 39 kilometres northeast of Cloncurry in Queensland. Open-pit mining previously took place between 2012 and 2014, with ore transported to the nearby Ernest Henry processing plant.

A 2022 project presentation cited an open-pit resource of 13 million tonnes grading 0.78 percent copper and 0.24 grams of gold per tonne. Bumi has not announced an updated resource estimate or a development timetable, leaving the project's contribution to production and cash flow dependent on further exploration and development work.

Director R.A. Sri Dharmayanti described the acquisition as a strategic step in Bumi's transformation plan and business diversification program. The transaction follows the company's move into other Australian copper-gold assets, including the portfolio acquired through its Loyal Metals expansion.

Execution remains the key investor question

The deal increases Bumi's exposure to metals while the company remains anchored by its coal business. For investors, the immediate significance is portfolio diversification rather than a near-term earnings contribution, because Mount Margaret is still at the exploration stage and no development schedule has been announced.
