Brookfield Asset Management is joining Drax, Radiant and Qai in a strategic partnership to develop an AI data-center campus at Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire. Drax announced the plan on Tuesday, November 3, and said the site could ultimately support more than one gigawatt of capacity. The announcement creates a new infrastructure angle for Brookfield, while the company's direct financial contribution was not separately disclosed.

Phased project depends on approvals

According to the Drax announcement, total potential investment could exceed 20 billion pounds, including 2.5 billion pounds for the first phase. That phase targets up to 100 megawatts and commercial operations from the first quarter of 2028. A second phase aims to add up to 500 megawatts between 2028 and 2031, with further expansion planned afterward.

The timetable remains conditional on planning, regulatory and network approvals, a suitable tenant and final investment decisions. Drax said a community consultation will begin shortly, followed by the formal planning process.

Brookfield platform leads commercialization

The partnership combines Drax's 1,000-acre estate, 4 gigawatts of grid access and 2.6 gigawatts of active dispatchable generation with Radiant's AI infrastructure capabilities. Radiant is expected to lead design, customer engagement and commercialization, while Drax handles land, power integration and planning. Capital and operating capabilities will come through the Brookfield-Qai AI infrastructure joint venture.

For investors, the project broadens Brookfield's exposure to power-intensive computing infrastructure. The potential scale is not yet committed operating capacity or recurring earnings because construction and commercialization remain subject to approvals and tenant demand.
