- BP sold 5 percent of Aker BP for gross proceeds of 1.06 billion US dollars.

BP has sold a 5 percent stake in Norwegian oil and gas producer Aker BP for gross proceeds of 1.06 billion US dollars, sharpening its focus on balance-sheet repair. Offshore Technology reported the transaction on Thursday, November 5, with the report published by Yahoo Finance.
BP sold the shares at 311 Norwegian kroner each, generating proceeds of 9.83 billion Norwegian kroner. The disposal reduces BP's holding in Aker BP from 15.9 percent to approximately 10.9 percent, while BP retains 68.7 million shares.
Asset sales support debt reduction
BP said it would use the proceeds to strengthen its balance sheet. Chief Executive Meg O'Neill said the stake had created significant value since Aker BP was formed and that the sale was the right time to realize part of that value as BP builds a simpler and stronger business.
The transaction also changes BP's broader 2026 outlook. The company now expects proceeds from divestments and other sources to reach approximately 9 billion US dollars, 1 billion US dollars above its previous guidance. BP has agreed not to sell its remaining Aker BP shares for 90 days, subject to customary exemptions.
The sale continues a portfolio reshaping effort that includes the disposal of non-core assets and a stronger emphasis on debt reduction. Aker BP remains strategically relevant: the Norwegian producer began output from its Skarv Satellite Project in August, a development covering the Alve Nord, Idun Nord and Oern fields with recoverable resources of about 120 million barrels of oil equivalent, according to the report.
Investors await the next strategy update
The transaction gives BP additional financial flexibility but also reduces its direct exposure to future value creation at Aker BP. For investors, the central question is how management will balance further disposals, debt reduction, investment in upstream assets and shareholder returns.
