BNY Expands Regulated Digital Custody

  • BNY extended its Digital Asset Custody platform to selected European Union institutions under the MiCA framework.
  • The European service can provide regulated access to BTC, ETH, SOL and USDC, with broader asset support planned.
  • The expansion builds on BNY's European entity joining the ESMA MiCA register in July 2026.

BNY expanded its Digital Asset Custody platform for selected institutions in the European Union on October 8, 2026, under the Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. In its company announcement, BNY said the move makes it one of the first global systemically important banks to offer regulated digital-asset custody in the region.

The expansion followed the addition of The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV, BNY's European banking entity, to the European Securities and Markets Authority MiCA register in July 2026. That registration enables BNY to provide custody, administration and transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients in the European Union.

Institutional Custody Enters EU Markets

BNY's platform, launched in 2022, uses multiparty computation technology, segregated client wallets and private-key storage. The bank said its custody model can provide regulated access to Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and USD Coin, while it aims to support a broader range of crypto-assets and stablecoins over time.

Jennifer Barker, BNY's head of Europe, said European adoption is accelerating as banks, broker-dealers, asset managers and corporate treasurers explore digital payments, tokenized securities, settlement and collateral mobility. Emily Portney, global head of Asset Servicing, said the platform is built on the controls and operating expertise of BNY's existing asset-servicing franchise.

For investors, the EU rollout extends BNY's traditional custody business into a regulated digital-asset market. The company said the platform is intended to support digital cash, tokenized assets, payments, settlement and collateral mobility. The announcement does not provide revenue guidance or a financial contribution target for the service.

BNY Mellon stock traded at 137.50 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 13:32 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
