BHP stock faces copper recovery test as FY27 guidance holds

- BHP's copper output fell as planned lower grades, maintenance, severe weather and operational disruptions weighed on key assets.
- Iron ore production increased and the company continued to advance copper and potash growth projects.
- The next investor focus is whether production recovers through the remaining FY27 quarters without a guidance reset.
BHP's copper business is entering the next phase of fiscal 2027 with its annual production target intact but less room for operational setbacks. In its quarterly activities report released on October 20, BHP said copper production for the quarter ended September 30 fell 19 percent year over year to 400.7 kilotonnes. The report was published by BHP's quarterly activities report.
Lower grades weigh on copper
BHP attributed the decline to planned lower concentrator feed grades, scheduled maintenance, severe weather in Chile, safety stoppages and a conveyor failure at Carrapateena in South Australia. Escondida, the group's largest copper operation, produced 252.6 kilotonnes, down 23 percent from the year-earlier quarter. The company said the mine was affected by lower feed grades, maintenance, severe weather and a temporary suspension following a fatal incident in September.
At Spence, also known as Pampa Norte, production fell 15 percent year over year to 47.4 kilotonnes. Copper South Australia produced 60.7 kilotonnes, down 16 percent, while Antamina increased output 18 percent to 40.0 kilotonnes. BHP said the Carrapateena conveyor was operating at full capacity after a replacement was installed and ramp-up work continued through September.
Guidance remains unchanged
BHP kept its FY27 copper production guidance at 1.65 million to 1.80 million tonnes. The Escondida target also remained unchanged at 1.00 million to 1.10 million tonnes, with full-year concentrator feed grade guidance of about 0.70 percent. Management's decision to retain the outlook indicates that the planned lower-grade mining sequence and the reported disruptions are being absorbed within the annual plan.
The company is also advancing the Escondida New Concentrator, with 0.8 billion US dollars of pre-commitment funding approved on a 100 percent basis. BHP said the project had moved into engineering, permitting and execution readiness. At Jansen, the potash project remained on track for first production in mid-2027, while the company continued to develop its Copper South Australia growth plans.
Iron ore provides a counterweight
Iron ore production rose 4 percent year over year to 66.5 million tonnes in the quarter, with Western Australia Iron Ore setting mine and port records during a maintenance-intensive period. Full-year iron ore guidance remained unchanged at 260 million to 272 million tonnes. The stronger bulk-commodity performance gives BHP some protection while copper output works through the weaker quarter.
