- Berkshire Hathaway is heading into its third-quarter 2026 results with revenue expected to grow year over year.
- Analysts expect earnings to decline from the year-earlier quarter despite a recent upward revision to the consensus estimate.
- Insurance, rail, utilities and capital allocation remain central factors for the upcoming report.
Berkshire Hathaway is heading into its third-quarter 2026 earnings release with analysts expecting revenue growth but a lower per-share result than a year earlier. A Yahoo Finance preview published on October 27 said the Zacks consensus called for revenue of 97.3 billion US dollars and earnings of 5.91 US dollars per Class-B share.
The revenue estimate implies 2.5 percent growth from the year-earlier quarter, while the earnings forecast points to a 5.6 percent decline. The consensus estimate had moved 4.4 percent higher over the previous 30 days, but Zacks said its most accurate estimate of 5.87 US dollars remained below the 5.91 US dollar consensus.
Insurance and operating units in focus
The earnings preview expects Berkshire's insurance operations to benefit from pricing, policy retention, higher average auto premiums, broader market exposure and favorable reserve development. It also anticipates stronger contributions from reinsurance and other primary insurance activities, potentially offsetting softer performance at GEICO.
Investment income from the insurance portfolio could provide another support as yields and the asset base remain elevated. For investors, the insurance result will be important because it combines underwriting performance with the investment income generated by Berkshire's substantial float.
BNSF Railway is expected to benefit from higher freight volumes and operating efficiencies, although fuel costs, wage inflation and other operating expenses could limit the contribution. Berkshire Hathaway Energy is also expected to post stronger earnings, supported by regulated utilities and natural gas pipeline operations.
Capital allocation remains a key issue
The preview also points to possible support from share repurchases. Berkshire's ability to deploy its liquidity through buybacks, acquisitions or securities purchases remains a central part of the investment case, particularly as investors assess the company's strategy under Chief Executive Officer Greg Abel.
Zacks said Berkshire had beaten its earnings consensus in three of the previous four quarters and missed once, with an average surprise of 12.04 percent. Its model did not conclusively signal an earnings beat for the coming report because the Earnings ESP was negative 0.59 percent, while the Zacks Rank was 2.
