Beiersdorf stock faces HSBC downgrade as NIVEA concerns persist

Beiersdorf stock came under fresh analyst scrutiny as HSBC turned more cautious on NIVEA and limited margin upside. Derma remains a bright spot.

Analyst view shifts toward execution

  • HSBC sees limited near-term scope for margin improvement as NIVEA sales momentum remains weak.
  • Derma and La Prairie provide important growth offsets within Beiersdorf's consumer portfolio.
  • Management continues to rely on inventory normalization and the NIVEA turnaround to support the outlook.

Beiersdorf stock faced a more cautious analyst view after HSBC downgraded the company to Hold from Buy on Monday, November 2, and cut its price target to 88 euros from 90 euros. Investing.com, citing Reuters, said the bank saw slower NIVEA shopper sales and less room for margin improvement in 2027.

HSBC questions the recovery path

HSBC's revised view followed Beiersdorf's third-quarter update from October 27. Group organic sales declined 1.3 percent, while NIVEA sales fell 4.9 percent organically. The bank said the quarter missed its estimate for the group, although the consumer division performed better than expected.

The pressure was concentrated in the core NIVEA business and the tesa electronics unit. A commercial dispute in Russia contributed 170 basis points to NIVEA's decline, according to the report, while management said the dispute had been resolved and normal business should resume in the fourth quarter. Retailer disputes, destocking and a difficult comparison with last year's launches are still expected to weigh on NIVEA.

HSBC cut its 2027 earnings-per-share forecast to 4.17 euros from 4.22 euros and lowered its adjusted operating-margin estimate to 12 percent from 12.2 percent. The bank said Beiersdorf's restrained pricing strategy could make it harder to offset higher raw-material and packaging costs, increasing the uncertainty around future margin expansion.

Growth pockets remain intact

Beiersdorf's portfolio also showed areas of resilience. Derma sales rose 10.6 percent organically in the third quarter, supported by Eucerin and Aquaphor, while La Prairie advanced 8.5 percent. Healthcare sales increased 5.7 percent. These businesses provide a counterweight to NIVEA's weakness, but HSBC does not expect a clear acceleration in NIVEA shopper sales or a substantial margin recovery over the next 12 months.

Management has kept its 2026 outlook unchanged. The company continues to expect a low-single-digit organic sales decline at group level and an EBIT margin excluding special factors of at least 11.8 percent. The Consumer segment is expected to post an EBIT margin of at least 11.0 percent. For investors, the key test is whether the turnaround can bring sell-in closer to sell-out while restoring healthier inventory levels by year-end.

The real-time quote of Beiersdorf stock was 83.61 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:02 CET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, 0.23 percent below the Xetra close of Monday, November 2.
