BAWAG Group's planned acquisition of Permanent TSB remains on schedule after the Irish lender reported stronger operating momentum for the first nine months of 2026. In a trading statement published on October 30, Permanent TSB said completion of the proposed sale to BAWAG is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027, subject to court and regulatory approval. The statement is available through Investegate.
Permanent TSB Reports Stronger Growth
Permanent TSB reported total operating income 7 percent higher year on year for the nine months to September 2026. Net interest income rose 9 percent, while the net interest margin reached 2.14 percent, an increase of 13 basis points. Operating costs declined 2 percent and the cost-income ratio fell to 70 percent from 77 percent.
The bank's gross loan book increased by more than 4 percent to 23.4 billion euros. New mortgage lending rose 10 percent, new business banking lending gained 16 percent and new personal term lending increased 90 percent. Customer deposits climbed 2 percent to 25.8 billion euros.
Approvals Still Set The Pace
Permanent TSB Chief Executive Eamonn Crowley said the sale to BAWAG was progressing as planned. He also pointed to a modest impairment write-back, strong funding and capital positions, and continued momentum in the Irish loan market. The bank retained its expectation of a return on tangible equity above 9 percent for 2026.
For BAWAG investors, the update supports the operating rationale for the proposed Irish expansion but does not remove execution risk. The acquisition still depends on court and regulatory approvals, and its contribution to BAWAG's earnings will only become visible after completion and integration. Permanent TSB reported a pro forma CET1 ratio of 17.9 percent at the end of September, while noting that the ratio excluding third-quarter profits was 17.2 percent.
BAWAG Group stock traded at 166.65 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:31 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Investors continue to weigh the transaction timetable against the approval process and the prospects for earnings growth from the enlarged banking group.
