BASF stock slips as higher outlook meets restructuring pressure
Published on 11/06/2026 at 10:30 | Editorial responsibility: Rafael Müller, Editor-in-Chief AD HOC NEWSStronger earnings, tighter outlook
- Higher prices and core-segment performance supported BASF's third-quarter growth.
- Restructuring charges and weaker operating cash flow continued to weigh on reported results.
- The upgraded outlook improves earnings visibility, but raw-material costs and industrial demand remain key risks.
BASF's third-quarter performance combined stronger operating momentum with continued pressure from restructuring and cash use. In a report published on Friday, November 6, 2026, PCI Magazine said BASF benefited from higher selling prices and improved results in core businesses during the third quarter.
BASF stock traded at 54.85 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:16 CET on Friday, November 6, 2026, 2.21 percent below the Xetra close of Thursday, November 5. The comparison uses the prior Xetra session because trading on November 6 was still underway.
Prices lift core businesses
Third-quarter sales rose 14 percent year over year to 16.4 billion euros. Higher prices contributed 12 percentage points to growth, while volumes added 2 percentage points. Chemicals, Materials, Surface Technologies and Industrial Solutions all benefited from improved pricing, while volumes rose substantially in Chemicals and Nutrition & Care.
EBITDA before special items increased 15 percent to 1.6 billion euros from 1.4 billion euros a year earlier. BASF's reported EBITDA was unchanged at 1.2 billion euros, however, as special items of negative 437 million euros reflected restructuring expenses at the Ludwigshafen site and the settlement of a legal dispute in the Care Chemicals division.
Guidance rises despite cash pressure
Chief Executive Markus Kamieth said the strong year-to-date performance of the core businesses allowed BASF to narrow its forecast range upward. The company now expects 2026 EBITDA before special items of 7.4 billion to 7.8 billion euros, compared with its previous range of 6.9 billion to 7.7 billion euros.
The reported earnings picture remains mixed. EBIT fell to a loss of 98 million euros from a profit of 232 million euros in the prior-year quarter, while net income declined to 155 million euros from 172 million euros. Adjusted earnings per share rose to 0.72 euros from 0.52 euros, but reported earnings per share slipped to 0.18 euros from 0.19 euros.
Operating cash flow declined to 1.1 billion euros. Higher raw-material prices tied up 507 million euros in inventories, compared with a release of 6 million euros a year earlier. Free cash flow nevertheless increased to 523 million euros from 398 million euros, and BASF retained its full-year free-cash-flow target of 1.5 billion to 2.3 billion euros.
What investors should watch
The higher adjusted outlook gives BASF more earnings support, but it does not remove the structural challenges facing the group. Restructuring costs, impairment charges and inventory needs can continue to separate adjusted performance from reported profit and cash generation. Agricultural Solutions remained a weak spot, with lower prices and a significant volume decline.
Investors should therefore weigh the upgraded earnings range against industrial demand, raw-material costs and the pace of restructuring. The real-time quote of BASF stock provides the latest trading indication.
