Barclays reshapes costs with AI

  • Barclays is targeting lower fixed costs through technology and organizational simplification.
  • Fixed-income trading weakened while equities revenue provided support in the third quarter.

Barclays is cutting around 5,000 jobs this year as the British bank uses artificial intelligence and other technology to reduce fixed costs and improve returns. The workforce reduction, equivalent to about 5% of employees, was disclosed with the bank's third-quarter results on October 22, according to Reuters.

About 60% of the planned reductions are expected to affect support functions, including developers. Barclays said 1,000 roles had already been eliminated by October 22, with the remaining cuts planned by year-end. The move highlights how automation is moving from a long-term efficiency theme into a direct cost lever for major banks.

Cost savings meet trading pressure

The job cuts came as Barclays reported third-quarter pretax profit of 2.3 billion pounds, 12% above the comparable period a year earlier but below analysts' forecasts. Chief Executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan said the performance of fixed-income trading required attention after a volatile quarter and weak activity in rates and credit products.

The Investment Bank generated 3.1 billion pounds of income in the quarter. Fixed-income trading income fell 19% to 1 billion pounds, while equities revenue rose 47%, according to Reuters. The contrast leaves Barclays more dependent on the durability of stronger equities activity while management works to improve performance in a historically important trading franchise.

The bank also recorded 201 million pounds of structural cost actions in the quarter. Barclays' official Q3 2026 results presentation links the organizational simplification to an expected reduction of about 5,000 full-time employees and identifies support functions as the main area affected.

Targets remain in focus

Despite the trading weakness, Barclays kept its broader financial targets unchanged. The bank is aiming for group income of around 31.5 billion pounds in 2026 and a statutory return on tangible equity above 12%. Its third-quarter return on tangible equity was 11.7%, while the year-to-date figure was 13.8%.

Capital returns remain part of the investment case. Barclays announced a 500 million pound share buyback with the results, taking announced year-to-date distributions to 2.8 billion pounds. The CET1 ratio stood at 14.2% at the end of September, or 14.0% on a pro-forma basis after the buyback.

Barclays stock traded at 5.05 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:16 CET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Investors are likely to weigh the planned efficiency gains against execution costs, employee reductions and the weaker fixed-income franchise. The next major scheduled company milestone is the full-year 2026 results on February 9, 2027.
