Bank of America is balancing higher near-term technology costs against expected efficiency gains after advanced AI models exposed weaknesses in proprietary and vendor software. The development was discussed by Chief Executive Brian Moynihan after the bank's third-quarter results on October 14, 2026, and reported by CNBC.
AI remediation adds temporary pressure
Bank of America added 1,000 outside contractors to work with 3,000 internal staff on software patching after Anthropic's Mythos and similar models revealed vulnerabilities. Moynihan said the bank spent a couple hundred million dollars or more in the third quarter on software remediation and anti-money-laundering compliance work combined.
The amount does not isolate the cost of AI-related patching. Moynihan expects the spending increase to ease as the existing vulnerabilities are addressed and the remediation pipeline moves forward.
Efficiency gains remain the counterweight
Bank of America is also pursuing savings through about 130 internal AI projects. CNBC reported that management expects savings from those efforts to rise from 300 million dollars in 2026 to 700 million dollars in 2027.
For investors, the key issue is execution: lower remediation spending would support earnings, while delays in fixing vulnerabilities or scaling internal AI projects could extend the cost burden. The bank's head count also fell by about 3,400 employees over the past year, although the contribution from AI was not specified.
