- Bank of America added 1,000 contractors to 3,000 internal staff handling software vulnerabilities.
- CEO Brian Moynihan expects remediation costs to decline as the patching backlog moves through the process.
- Internal AI projects are projected to generate USD 700 million in savings in 2027.
Bank of America is expanding its response to software vulnerabilities exposed by advanced artificial intelligence models. In an interview with CNBC published October 14, CEO Brian Moynihan said the bank had added 1,000 external contractors to support 3,000 internal employees working on patches for its own and vendors' software.
The effort followed the arrival of advanced models including Anthropic's Mythos, which can identify weaknesses in older software. Moynihan said the bank moved quickly to strengthen a broad range of internal and vendor code because the security risk was real and the vulnerabilities needed to be addressed faster.
Remediation costs should ease
Bank of America spent a couple hundred million dollars plus in the third quarter on software remediation and regulatory issues linked to anti-money-laundering compliance, according to Moynihan's comments reported by CNBC. The amount combines the two areas, so it does not isolate the cost of AI-related patching.
Moynihan described the higher spending as temporary. His expectation is that remediation costs will decline after the initial backlog is cleared: once systems are patched, the volume of required patching should fall. That outlook matters for investors because the work adds near-term expense without representing a recurring revenue stream.
The bank is also highlighting the potential operating benefit of AI. Moynihan said Bank of America has about 130 internal AI projects, with projected savings rising from USD 300 million in 2026 to USD 700 million in 2027. The figures show the two-sided effect of the technology: AI is expected to reduce costs in some processes while creating additional security and compliance work in others.
Investor focus shifts to execution
CNBC reported that Bank of America shares fell as much as 8% on October 14, when Moynihan discussed the spending and the bank's regulatory remediation. The market response was reported alongside the comments, while the underlying investment question remains whether the defensive costs decline as management expects and whether the internal AI projects deliver the forecast savings.
