Bank of America is using outside contractors to repair software vulnerabilities exposed by advanced artificial intelligence models, adding a new cost dimension to the bank's technology push. Chief Executive Brian Moynihan discussed the effort with CNBC after Bank of America reported its third-quarter results on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
According to CNBC, the bank added 1,000 third-party contractors to work alongside 3,000 internal employees on proprietary and vendor software. The hiring followed the release of Anthropic's Mythos, an AI model that exposed weaknesses in software code. Moynihan said the bank had moved quickly because the security risk was material and required a broad patching effort.
Remediation costs should ease
Moynihan told analysts that software remediation and anti-money-laundering compliance work together added a couple hundred million dollars or more to third-quarter costs. He did not separate the amount attributable to AI-related patching from the compliance work, so the combined figure does not represent a standalone Mythos bill.
The chief executive said the spending surge should be temporary. Once the existing vulnerabilities are patched, he expects the workload and the need for outside support to decline. That offers some relief for earnings, but it also shows how quickly AI can create unplanned technology and control costs for large financial institutions.
Bank of America is pursuing savings from AI at the same time. Moynihan said the bank has about 130 internal AI projects, with expected savings rising from 300 million dollars in 2026 to 700 million dollars in 2027. The bank's head count fell by about 3,400 employees over the past year, although CNBC said it was unclear how much of that reduction was attributable to AI.
Investor focus shifts to execution
The spending profile leaves investors weighing near-term remediation costs against potential efficiency gains. The cost outlook depends on how quickly the patching program advances, while the projected savings depend on whether the bank can scale its internal AI projects without creating new operational or compliance risks.
