- North American drilling activity expanded as Canadian rigs increased while the US total stayed steady.
- Oil-focused activity strengthened in the US, but gas-directed drilling weakened in the latest weekly count.
Baker Hughes' weekly rig count for the week ended October 30 showed a broader North American increase even as the US total held steady. The figures were reported by Yahoo Finance in a report published Wednesday, November 4.
North American activity broadens
The US count remained at 603 rigs, while Canada added six rigs to reach 226. That lifted the North American total to 829, extending a run of higher regional activity and keeping drilling demand in focus for oilfield-service companies.
The US composition was more important than the unchanged headline total. Oil rigs increased by two to 462, while gas rigs declined by two to 130. Miscellaneous rigs stayed at 11, leaving the overall US count unchanged for the week.
Oil gains offset gas weakness
The latest split points to firmer oil-directed activity but softer gas-directed activity. For Baker Hughes, the figures provide a current industry indicator rather than company guidance, with service demand still influenced by basin mix, customer spending and commodity prices.
The US total was 57 rigs above its year-earlier level, according to the report. That year-on-year improvement supports a constructive backdrop for the energy technology group's upstream services, although the weekly count alone does not establish a revenue forecast.
