- Fastmarkets reported that Aurubis lifted its annual European copper premium for 2027 supplies.
- Market participants were divided because weak spot buying and elevated copper prices could limit the impact of higher annual terms.
- The company expects strong demand across data centers, electric vehicles and renewable energy.
Fastmarkets reported on October 14 that Aurubis had raised its premium for European customers to 347 US dollars per tonne for contractual copper supplies in 2027. The report said the offer was 10.2 percent above the 2026 level and represented a record annual contractual premium.
Fastmarkets said Aurubis declined to comment, describing the terms as communications between the company and its customers. Traders cited different expectations for the premium, with some anticipating a rollover or a decline because of subdued spot buying at elevated London Metal Exchange copper prices.
Annual terms face a tougher spot market
Fastmarkets placed the reported annual offer against a German spot copper premium assessment of 250 to 280 US dollars per tonne on October 6. That gap indicates that the annual contract level is not a direct measure of current spot-market conditions.
Market participants also pointed to possible arbitrage between the London Metal Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, as well as uncertainty over potential United States copper tariffs. For Aurubis, higher customer premiums may improve pricing conditions, but they do not by themselves establish the effect on earnings because volumes, metal prices, treatment charges and operating costs also matter.
Aurubis says its shares are listed in the Prime Standard segment of the German stock exchange and included in the MDAX. The company identifies data centers, electric vehicles and renewable-energy infrastructure as demand drivers behind its expectation of strong copper demand in 2027.
