AT&T faces a physical-network risk after copper theft disrupted communications infrastructure in Georgia. Copper theft can damage fiber networks
According to WSB-TV, Georgia ranks among the US states most affected by copper theft. The broadcaster said thieves can cut lines within minutes, while repairs can take hours and leave customers without phone or internet service.
Todd Zeiler, AT&T's vice president of construction and engineering, told WSB-TV that copper and fiber lines can run alongside each other. A cut aimed at copper can therefore damage fiber infrastructure serving homes, businesses and critical facilities. AT&T officials said copper can fetch about 6 US dollars per pound.
Operational risk outweighs near-term earnings detail
The report said USTelecom counted more than 18,000 theft and vandalism incidents involving communications networks across the United States in 2025, affecting nearly 12 million customers. AT&T Global Security investigator Jenaro Hare said outages can also affect hospitals, airports and communication centers.
For investors, the reward program highlights a service-reliability risk that can create repair work, disruption and reputational pressure. The WSB-TV report did not quantify a near-term earnings effect, so the development is primarily operational rather than a new profit forecast.
