- Third-quarter results are scheduled for November 3 after the U.S. market close.
- Management expects higher operating expenses, including a USD 100 million research and development charge.
- Growth brands must offset falling sales of Prolia and XGEVA amid biosimilar competition.
Amgen is heading into its third-quarter report with revenue momentum facing a planned increase in spending. The company is scheduled to release results on Tuesday, November 3, after the U.S. market close, according to a Yahoo Finance analysis published on October 29.
Yahoo Finance said Amgen's outgoing chief financial officer Peter Griffith had warned of a meaningful sequential increase in third-quarter operating expenses. The planned costs include a USD 100 million upfront payment tied to a business-development deal that will be recorded in research and development.
Revenue growth meets margin pressure
The spending outlook creates a tougher earnings comparison after Amgen delivered non-GAAP earnings per share of USD 6.29 in the second quarter, ahead of a USD 5.62 consensus estimate. Revenue reached USD 10.05 billion, up 9.7 percent year over year and above the USD 9.42 billion estimate cited in the report.
Analysts tracked by the report expect third-quarter normalized earnings per share of USD 5.7876 and revenue of USD 10.08 billion. Those estimates imply earnings growth of 2.6 percent and revenue growth of 5.4 percent from the prior-year quarter. The earnings estimate is below the second-quarter result, placing operating margin and cost control at the center of the upcoming release.
Amgen has raised its full-year outlook to revenue of USD 38.2 billion to USD 39.4 billion and non-GAAP earnings per share of USD 22.30 to USD 23.50. Management's full-year non-GAAP operating-margin guide is about 45 percent to 46 percent of product sales, compared with 48 percent in the second quarter.
Growth brands carry the portfolio
Commercial performance will determine whether higher investment can be absorbed. Repatha revenue rose 37 percent to USD 953 million in the second quarter, while Evenity increased 38 percent to USD 714 million and Tezspire gained 42 percent to USD 486 million. Imdelltra revenue climbed 115 percent as the drug expands into Europe and China.
At the same time, biosimilar competition pushed Prolia revenue down 32 percent and XGEVA revenue down 34 percent. The report also points to ongoing investment in nine global Phase 3 MariTide trials, alongside olpasiran and xaluritamig, with capital expenditure guided at about USD 2.6 billion.
