American Electric Power said on October 28, 2026, that it had raised its long-term operating earnings outlook and expanded its capital plan as electricity demand accelerates across its service territory. The company announced the measures in its AEP news release.

American Electric Power stock traded at 117.33 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 13:35 CET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, 1.25 percent above the Xetra close of Monday, November 2. The quote was therefore ahead of the previous Xetra session while the German market was still open.

Higher earnings growth outlook

AEP introduced an expected annual operating earnings-per-share growth rate of 9 percent to 11 percent for 2027 through 2031, compared with the previous range of 7 percent to 9 percent. Management also expects an operating earnings compound annual growth rate above 10 percent through 2031, based on the original 2026 guidance midpoint of 6.30 US dollars per share.

The company expects 2026 operating earnings to reach at least the high end of its 6.25 to 6.55 US dollar guidance range. It issued operating earnings guidance of 6.75 to 7.05 US dollars per share for 2027 and 7.40 to 7.70 US dollars for 2028. These are non-GAAP figures that exclude items management considers unrelated to ongoing performance.

Capital plan follows customer demand

The expanded five-year capital plan calls for 100 billion US dollars of investment through 2031. AEP expects the program to lift its rate base from 87 billion US dollars in 2026 to 162 billion US dollars in 2031, implying annual growth above 13 percent.

The plan includes 37 billion US dollars for transmission, 36 billion US dollars for generation and 22 billion US dollars for distribution. The investments are aimed at strengthening reliability, modernizing the grid and serving new customer demand. AEP said it signed 15 gigawatts of new load commitments during the third quarter, taking expected incremental contracted load to 84 gigawatts by 2031.

Management also expects fully executed take-or-pay electric service agreements in its vertically integrated states to generate up to 21 billion US dollars in fixed-cost offsets for existing residential customers over the life of the contracts. That figure increased from the previously stated 16 billion US dollars.

Quarterly earnings improve

Third-quarter GAAP earnings rose to 1.187 billion US dollars, or 2.18 US dollars per share, from 972 million US dollars, or 1.82 US dollars per share, a year earlier. Operating earnings increased to 1.216 billion US dollars, or 2.23 US dollars per share, from 963 million US dollars, or 1.80 US dollars per share.

The earnings improvement gives AEP more room to fund its investment plans, but the outlook remains exposed to construction execution, regulatory approvals, financing costs and the pace at which large-load demand materializes. The company also warns that future GAAP results may differ from its operating guidance because of items that cannot currently be forecast.
