AIA Group stock faces a softer third quarter after strong prior-year sales in Hong Kong and mainland China. September momentum improved sharply.

Mixed Quarter, Stronger September Momentum

  • Third-quarter value of new business declined as Hong Kong and mainland China faced demanding prior-year comparisons.
  • Higher margins and growth across several Asian markets supported the nine-month performance.
  • Management expects the fourth quarter to benefit from easier comparisons and stronger operating momentum.

AIA Group reported a mixed third quarter on Friday, October 30, 2026, as value of new business weakened against high prior-year sales in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. The company said September brought a sharp recovery and expects strong momentum in the final quarter.

According to AIA's official release, third-quarter value of new business fell 5 percent at constant exchange rates to US$1,415 million from US$1,476 million a year earlier. The decline reflected exceptionally strong July and August comparisons in Hong Kong and mainland China rather than a broad-based deterioration across the group.

Regional Mix Shapes The Quarter

Hong Kong VONB declined 3 percent, while mainland China fell 33 percent. AIA linked the mainland comparison to accelerated customer purchases before industry-wide repricing on September 1, 2025. In Hong Kong, VONB across August and September combined rose 20 percent year on year after unusually strong sales in July 2025.

Other markets provided a counterweight. Third-quarter VONB increased 9 percent in Thailand, 22 percent in Singapore and 10 percent in Malaysia, while Other Markets grew 14 percent. Taken together, businesses outside Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland delivered 18 percent growth.

The quality of new business improved even as volume declined. The VONB margin widened 5.3 percentage points to 63.5 percent, helped by a greater share of protection products in mainland China. Annualised new premiums decreased 13 percent to US$2,237 million, while total weighted premium income rose 7 percent to US$12,892 million.

September Sets Up Fourth Quarter

For the first nine months, VONB increased 5 percent to US$4,627 million from US$4,314 million. September VONB was more than 25 percent above the prior-year level, and agency business benefited from higher numbers of active agents, recruits and agency leaders. AIA said engagement with bank partners also deepened.

Group Chief Executive and President Lee Yuan Siong said demand for protection, health, savings and retirement products remained strong. He added that AIA entered the fourth quarter with strong momentum and expects to exceed its 9 to 11 percent operating profit after tax per-share compound annual growth target for 2023 through 2026.
