  • The October disruption is expected to weigh on fourth-quarter sales and operating income.

Ahold Delhaize reported resilient third-quarter results on Wednesday, November 4, but lowered parts of its 2026 outlook after an October cybersecurity incident. The company said in its Ahold Delhaize newsroom release that third-quarter net sales rose 1.9% at constant exchange rates and 2.6% at actual exchange rates.

Ahold Delhaize stock traded at EUR 33.95 on Lang & Schwarz at 10:07 CET on Friday, November 6, 1.54% below the Xetra close of EUR 34.48 on Thursday, November 5. The quote keeps the share under pressure as investors weigh resilient operating trends against the earnings effect of the cyber incident.

Resilient quarter before disruption

Group online sales increased 8.2% at constant exchange rates, led by 14.2% growth in the United States. Comparable sales excluding gasoline rose 0.5% in the U.S. and 2.1% in Europe. The company said the U.S. performance was held back by reduced SNAP benefits, the cyclospora outbreak, egg-price deflation and pharmacy pricing changes linked to the Inflation Reduction Act.

The underlying operating margin was 4.1%, down 0.1 percentage points at constant exchange rates. IFRS operating income reached EUR 976 million, while diluted underlying earnings per share stood at EUR 0.69. IFRS results were EUR 30 million higher than underlying results, primarily because of a pension settlement in the U.S., making the distinction between reported and underlying performance relevant for investors.

Cyber costs pressure fourth quarter

The October incident affected online capabilities in the Benelux and the U.S., as well as Benelux supply-chain operations. Ahold Delhaize said most of the disruption was contained within two weeks, while work to restore normal operations continued. The company expects the incident to reduce fourth-quarter net sales by EUR 200 million to EUR 250 million and underlying and IFRS operating income by EUR 75 million to EUR 100 million. Additional response and remediation costs are expected to have a marginal effect on 2026 IFRS operating income.

As a result, management now expects diluted underlying EPS growth at constant exchange rates in the low single digits, compared with its previous mid- to high-single-digit forecast. Free cash flow is expected at around EUR 2.1 billion, down from the previous target of at least EUR 2.3 billion. The underlying operating margin is now expected to approach 4.0%, versus the earlier expectation of around 4.0%.

Buyback keeps capital returns in focus

Despite the near-term setback, management said its strategic priorities remain unchanged. Ahold Delhaize announced a EUR 1 billion share buyback program to start at the beginning of 2027 and expects to increase its 2026 dividend per share at a mid-single-digit rate under the revised outlook.

The company also pointed to continued U.S. online momentum and investments in stores, distribution capacity and technology. For the share, the immediate question is whether the fourth-quarter disruption remains contained within the company's estimates while the stronger digital performance and planned capital returns support the longer-term investment case.
