- Advantest lifted its fiscal-year operating-profit forecast after record first-half results driven by AI-related tester demand.
- The company authorized a buyback of up to JPY 280 billion and raised its interim dividend to JPY 49 per share.
- Investor concerns about the returns on AI infrastructure spending pressured Japanese technology shares later in the week.
Advantest stock traded at 193.10 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:15 CET on Saturday, October 31, 2026. The Japanese semiconductor equipment maker heads into the weekend after raising its full-year outlook, while renewed doubts about the returns on AI investment weighed on technology shares.
Record half-year lifts outlook
Advantest raised its operating-profit forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2027 to JPY 967.0 billion from JPY 846.0 billion in July. Tokyo Brief reported that first-half sales reached JPY 845.2 billion, up 60.5 percent from a year earlier, while operating profit rose 96.5 percent to JPY 456.8 billion in the six months ended September 30.
The company attributed the improvement to stronger demand for testers used with AI-related semiconductors, higher device complexity and a more favorable sales mix. The revised forecast also lifts full-year sales to JPY 1,863.0 billion from JPY 1,714.0 billion. Advantest expects second-half operating margin to exceed 50 percent, despite higher component costs.
Tokyo Brief said Advantest expects semiconductor tester supply to remain constrained in 2027, subject to geopolitical and macroeconomic risks. The company has reached annual SoC tester capacity of more than 5,000 systems and aims to reach 10,000 systems ahead of its original schedule.
Capital returns add support
Advantest authorized the purchase of up to 11 million shares for a maximum of JPY 280 billion between October 29, 2026 and March 24, 2027. The authorization is a ceiling rather than a statement of completed purchases. The company also raised its interim dividend to JPY 49 per share from JPY 29 a year earlier.
Reuters reported on October 30 that concerns over the profitability of heavy AI infrastructure spending spread through Asian technology markets. Advantest was among the Japanese chip-related shares under pressure as investors reassessed whether rising capital expenditure would generate sustainable returns.
Investors will focus next on whether Advantest can convert strong AI-related demand into sustained shipments and margins as capacity expands.
