Acerinox is partnering with energy company IGNIS on two decarbonization projects at its Campo de Gibraltar stainless steel plant in Spain. Shanghai Metals Market reported the agreement on Monday, November 2, 2026, citing a 12 MW industrial heat pump and a 120 MWh thermal storage system.

The heat pump is designed to recover waste heat from the hot-rolling furnace. The storage system will be charged with electricity during off-peak hours, giving the plant another way to manage energy use while reducing reliance on higher-cost periods.

Projects target 2028 operations

Both installations are scheduled to enter service in December 2028. Shanghai Metals Market said the projects are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 18,500 tonnes a year, equivalent to 10 percent, according to the report.

IGNIS is expected to finance an investment of EUR 40 million. Spanish grants of EUR 19.3 million are set to support the plan, reducing the direct funding burden associated with the industrial upgrades. The arrangement also gives Acerinox access to a specialist energy partner as the steel producer works to lower emissions from a power-intensive production process.

The Campo de Gibraltar site is part of Acerinox's Spanish operations and produces stainless steel. For investors, the project adds a longer-term efficiency and emissions-reduction element to the company's operating agenda. The scheduled commissioning date means the financial effect is prospective rather than an immediate change to current earnings.

Acerinox stock traded at 16.16 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:45 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

Recent company coverage has focused on stronger nine-month profitability and seasonal pressure expected in the United States during the fourth quarter. The IGNIS agreement addresses plant energy infrastructure instead and therefore represents a separate development for the investment case.
