Abbott Laboratories announced on October 21, 2026, that it intends to separate its global Nutrition business into an independent publicly traded company. The plan remains the main strategic issue for investors, while a stronger euro quote adds a fresh market angle.
Nutrition plan sets the next test
According to Abbott MediaRoom, the planned transaction would create a separate company with approximately 8.5 billion US dollars in annual sales, about 16,000 employees and 14 manufacturing sites. Its brands would include Similac, PediaSure, Pedialyte, Glucerna and Ensure.
Abbott intends to distribute shares in the new company to existing shareholders on a tax-free basis for US federal income tax purposes. Shareholders would own shares in both businesses after completion, while Daniel Salvadori is expected to lead the Nutrition company.
Conditions keep execution in focus
The separation is targeted for completion by the end of 2027. Regulatory approvals, the effectiveness of a Form 10 registration statement and final approval by Abbott's board remain conditions to closing. Abbott says the Nutrition business will continue operating within the group during the separation process.
After the transaction, Abbott expects to retain approximately 42 billion US dollars in sales and focus on medical devices, biowearables, diagnostics and established medicines. The company says the plan will not affect its 2026 guidance or the 2027 guidance it plans to provide in January, although one-time transaction charges are expected before completion.
