ABB stock faces China hurdle as SoftBank robotics deal remains open

- China prohibited SoftBank's acquisition of ABB's robotics business in the country, while both companies said talks remain constructive.
- Record third-quarter orders and triple-digit data-center demand underpin ABB's low-teens 2026 comparable revenue outlook.
- Capacity constraints, integration execution and the January 2027 outlook are key issues for investors.
ABB's week combined a regulatory setback for its planned robotics transaction with continued investor focus on strong orders and data-center demand. China prohibited SoftBank's acquisition of ABB's robotics business in the country on November 4, according to SoftBank's November 6 statement.
SoftBank said the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. It added that it and ABB are in close dialogue and working constructively on the transaction. The Chinese decision therefore raises execution and timing risk, but does not by itself establish that the broader transaction has ended.
Orders stay ahead of revenue
An independent Futurum analysis published on November 2 highlighted ABB's third-quarter results for the period ended September 30. Orders reached 12.06 billion US dollars, up 40 percent year on year, while revenue rose 14 percent to 9.70 billion US dollars. Operational EBITA increased 24 percent to 2.03 billion US dollars, and the margin expanded to 20.8 percent.
Data-center orders grew at a triple-digit rate, with Electrification orders up 70 percent on a comparable basis. Futurum also noted that some product lines are operating close to full capacity before new plants come online in 2027, putting delivery reliability and capacity discipline alongside demand in the investment case.
Outlook and investor watchpoints
ABB expects comparable revenue growth in the low-teens range for 2026, a positive book-to-bill ratio and reported Operational EBITA margin improvement of at least 270 basis points year on year. Management expects fourth-quarter comparable revenue growth to remain broadly similar to the third quarter, while the operational margin should decline sequentially less than in the usual seasonal pattern.
The robotics transaction remains an important variable because the expected divestment gain is excluded from that outlook. Investors will also watch whether the order backlog converts into revenue as planned, whether capacity expansion keeps pace with data-center demand and how the China obstacle affects the transaction timetable.
