- 3M announced the PFAS personal-injury settlement on November 3.
- The agreement covers about 99% of current claims and depends on participation thresholds.
- The fourth-quarter charge is treated as a special item and leaves 2026 guidance unchanged.
3M announced on November 3 that it had reached a broad resolution of PFAS-related personal-injury claims in the Aqueous Film-Forming Foam multidistrict litigation in South Carolina. The company said the agreement addresses about 99% of current claims inside and outside the litigation.
The real-time quote of 3M stock was 166.55 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 16:09 CET on Friday, November 6, 2.89 percent below the Xetra close of Thursday, November 5, at 171.50 euros.
Settlement limits legal uncertainty
Under the agreement, 3M will make a pre-tax nominal commitment of 7.35 billion US dollars over nine years through 2034. The present value is 5.8 billion US dollars, which the company will record as a pre-tax charge in the fourth quarter of 2026.
According to the 3M News Center, the agreement includes a 50 million US dollar payment in 2026 and no payment in 2027. About 20% of payments fall due in the final two years, while a 680 million US dollar reserve covers remaining and future personal-injury claims.
Charge leaves guidance intact
3M will treat the charge as a special item when calculating adjusted results. Management said the settlement does not change previously issued 2026 guidance, but participation thresholds remain important because the company may continue defending claims if the agreed terms are not fulfilled.
