Over a ten‑year period, the African Barrick GoldGroup has become the largest gold producer in Tanzania, growing from no production in 2000 to approximately 716,000 attributable ounces in 2009.

The ABG Group has four producing mines, all located in northwest Tanzania: Bulyanhulu (underground gold mine, which began production in April2001); Buzwagi (open pit gold mine, which began production in May2009); North Mara (open pit gold mine consisting of three open pit deposits, which began production in April2002); and Tulawaka (open pit gold mine that has transitioned to an underground operation, which began production in March2005).

The ABG Group has seven principal exploration prospects in Tanzania, at various stages of development. As at 31January2010, the ABG Group held an interest in 239 granted prospecting licences, prospecting licences reconnaissance, special mining licences and mining licences covering approximately 309,377hectares in Tanzania and it also held interests in approximately 275 pending applications for prospecting licences and prospecting licences reconnaissance covering approximately 719,067 hectares in Tanzania. The ABG Group's recent exploration focus has been on advancing the exploration opportunities around its existing mines in order to increase the ABG Group's reserves and resources.

The ABG Group's headquarters are located in London, England. As at 31December2009, the ABG Group had a total of 4,210 employees, with an additional 2,793 contracted personnel.
