A 47 percent jump in psychologically induced sick days between 2014 and 2024, recorded by the AOK Fehlzeiten-Report, has put workplace mental health at the top of the agenda for many German employers. The figure comes as regional initiatives and EU-level programs alike push for more targeted prevention strategies.

On June 24, the Industrie- und Handelskammer Osnabrück will host a corporate health management day under the banner “Gesunde Teams – starke Leistung” (Healthy Teams – Strong Performance). Organised jointly by GewiNet, the IHK, health insurer BARMER and the centrumed health centre, the event focuses on gender-specific workplace health and psychological stress. Registration for executives and HR specialists closes on June 10. Attendance costs 60 euros for members of the participating organisations and 100 euros for others.

The growing emphasis on structured workplace prevention mirrors what UK employers face when managing health and safety documentation. The timing reflects a broader shift. The organisers argue that only differentiated approaches for women and men can secure long-term team performance. Alongside expert lectures, the programme reserves significant space for exchanging practical prevention ideas.

The AOK data is not the only warning signal. The “OSH Pulse 2025” survey found that 78 percent of German employees now use internet-connected devices at work, while one-third report climate-related health risks on the job.

At the European level, the EU plans a “Healthy Workplaces” campaign from 2026 to 2028 specifically targeting mental health. The EU4Health programme has allocated 1.23 billion euros for the effort. In parallel, the EU’s occupational safety and health agency will launch a dedicated project on psychosocial risks in 2026.

The Osnabrück initiative is part of a wider momentum. In Rostock, the 21st National Sector Conference on Health Economics will take place on June 11 and 12, gathering over 600 experts to discuss resilience, artificial intelligence and prevention. Conference president Professor Dr. Marek Zygmunt highlighted the economic heft of the sector: in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, healthcare already generates 14.6 percent of gross domestic product.

While conferences develop strategy, some companies are already acting. Deutsche Post held a workplace safety day at its Bremen branch, held in Osterholz-Scharmbeck. Around 1,000 employees tested parcel-truck obstacle courses, rollover simulators and received ergonomic lifting advice.

Practical prevention days like these underscore what formal compliance requires. UK employers face serious penalties if they fall short of their duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act. A free toolkit offers nine tools including risk assessments and a directors' liability guide to help you stay compliant. Get the free Health & Safety at Work Act Toolkit

The BGM-Tag in Osnabrück aims to bridge exactly that gap: scientific evidence meets concrete solutions for regional employers. Healthy corporate culture, the organisers stress, is no longer a luxury but an economic necessity.
