Bremen Rolls Out New Workplace Health Checks as Employers Confront Soaring Mental Health and Heat Stress

A wave of new preventive health services has reached small and medium-sized businesses in Bremen as of June 8, 2026, offering a direct response to mounting worker health challenges. The provider Samedos launched a full spectrum of mandatory occupational medical screenings and consulting services this month, with prices ranging from 80 to 200 euros per examination.
The timing coincides with growing alarm over psychological strain and climate-related risks. The AOK sick-leave report recorded a 47 percent rise in mental health disorders between 2014 and 2024, while roughly one-third of employees now report health hazards linked to shifting climatic conditions. A nationwide Heat Action Day on June 11, 2026, underscores the urgency: the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) warns that heat exhaustion – marked by elevated pulse, muscle cramps and nausea – requires employers to provide electrolyte drinks and adapt workplace environments.

Samedos targets firms that often lack in-house medical resources. Its portfolio covers legally required check-ups for driving fitness (G25, 80–120 euros), screen-based work (G37), work at height (G41, 150–200 euros), infection risks (G42), musculoskeletal strain (G46) and skin disorders (G24). Services are available either at the provider’s practice or on-site at the company. The costs reflect typical market rates for such specialised assessments.
Beyond individual screenings, strategic workplace health management (BGM) is gaining traction. Psychosocial risk assessments, mandatory since 2013 under the German Occupational Health and Safety Act (Arbeitsschutzgesetz), are in particularly high demand. For a firm with roughly 30 employees, such an analysis costs between 1,500 and 3,500 euros and takes six to ten weeks to complete. Ergonomics consulting and the company reintegration process (Betriebliches Eingliederungsmanagement, BEM) are also expanding. Health insurers support these measures with subsidies of up to 600 euros per employee per year.
A digital milestone already in place: the electronic sick note (eAU) replaced the paper "yellow slip" in early 2023, speeding communication and cutting administrative clutter.
Regional initiatives show how seriously the issue is now taken. In Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Deutsche Post held a workplace safety day at the town hall, where around 1,000 staff tested a rollover simulator and received advice on back-friendly lifting techniques.
Safety events raise awareness, but day-to-day compliance requires robust systems. Over 37,000 UK businesses use the free Health & Safety Toolkit to document risk assessments and meet legal duties. Download the free Health & Safety Toolkit
Individual employers are also innovating. The REWE Christian Seidel oHG supermarket in Oyten began granting new employees time credits for preventive check-ups starting June 2026, aiming to weave health checks directly into the workday.
At the European level, the EU4Health campaign has dedicated 2026 to intensifying work on psychosocial risks in the workplace – a sign that Bremen’s local capacity boost is part of a broader shift toward prevention as a core business responsibility.
