In recognition of outstanding services to the progress of solar energy
SolarWorld AG will be awarding for the third time the SolarWorld Einstein
Award founded by the company. The 2007 award will go to the Australian
scientist and photovoltaic pioneer Prof. Dr. Martin Green. The award winner
has been working for decades with great success on the development of new
technologies in the field of solar power technology. Thus, his renowned
research centre at the University of New South Wales has for years held the
world record of 24.7 per cent in the degree of efficiency of crystalline
solar silicon cells. Prof. Dr. Martin Green is the author of many books and
publications in periodicals. His ideas and research results have been used
in industry for many years. 'Prof. Dr. Martin Green is an outstanding
scientist who time and again shows us new horizons and who has
fundamentally advanced the photovoltaic science', says Dr. Holger Neuhaus,
Head of Research of the SolarWorld subsidiary Deutsche Cell GmbH in his
laudation.
The SolarWorld Einstein Award that carries a prize money of 10,000 EUR will
be presented on the occasion of the 22nd European Solar Energy Conference
in Milan. The award ceremony will take place on 03 September 2007.
Einstein Junior Award for fundamental material investigations
At the same time SolarWorld AG will honour outstanding work by junior
scientists. The 2007 Einstein Junior Award will go to three degree students
of the Hahn-Meitner Institute in Berlin for their work on the special
electrical properties of crystal grain boundaries. The jury specifically
praised the clear and exact approach as well as the scientific team spirit
reflected by the well coordinated pieces of work. The prize money amounting
to 5,000 EUR will be shared by Tobias Eisenbarth, Caspar Leendertz and Mark
Wimmer.
Solar industry attractive for specialists
For SolarWorld AG the bestowal and presentation of the Einstein Award is
part of its social commitment to the technical development of the
photovoltaic industry. With the Junior Award it wants to direct the
attention of students to the fascinating possibilities of solar power
technology. 'The solar industry needs young specialists who continuously
advance the photovoltaic development', says Dipl.-Ing. Frank H. Asbeck,
Chairman and CEO of SolarWorld AG. 'What makes SolarWorld AG and the entire
industry interesting for the experts is that in the solar industry they
will have a hand in actively designing a sustainable and peaceful future.
We sense that this possibility is crucial to many junior talents in
selecting their future careers.'
Solar racer presented internationally for the first time
On the occasion of the Milan award ceremony SolarWorld AG presented its
solar racing car SolarWorld No.1 to an international audience for the first
time. The racer propelled by the power of the sun was developed and
designed by engineering students of the Bochum University of Applied
Science. As the main sponsor SolarWorld AG again creates attractive
technological challenges for junior scientists with this project bringing
together different engineering skills like mechanical engineering,
mechatronics, computer science and electronics. The solar cells have been
integrated into the vehicle with the Gochermann technology tried and tested
in space technology. The unique know-how of Gochermann Solar Technology
which already guaranteed success in solar motor racing in the past will
make for maximum efficiency of the mobile solar system. The solar racer
mainly made of carbon fibers will go into the unofficial world
championships of solar motor sports, the Panasonic World Solar Challenge,
in Australia from 21 to 28 October 2007, with the explicit intention of
winning the race.
